The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has requested the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) for taking steps to allocate 31,394 tonnes of rice for selling among more than 6.0 million smartcard-holder families through its monthly essential drive, sources said.
The chairman of the state-run agency recently wrote the ministry for taking next course of action regarding the issue.
A MoC official said, “We have forwarded the TCB’s letter to the Ministry of Food to allocate the rice. The ministry has informed us that it would allocate the rice as per the TCB’s requirement in time.”
Currently, the number of smartcard-holders is around 6.53 million. Of them, average 6.28 million smartcards are active.
The TCB sells five kg rice along with some essential items, like edible oil, sugar and lentils, to each of the cardholder families at subsidized prices.
Its monthly sales activities started in March 2022. Earlier, it operated drives when the prices of essentials soared. It added five kg rice with the other items in July 2023.
