Rice prices surge by up to Rs 1,000 per maund.

By: News Desk.

Prices of rice have surged sharply in South Punjab’s largest wholesale market, leaving both traders and consumers concerned over the rising cost of a staple commodity, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Tuesday.

In the Multan grain market, rice rates have jumped by Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per maund, depending on the variety. Saila Kainat rice, a popular variety, saw an increase from Rs 10,700 to Rs 11,700 per maund, while raw Kainat rice climbed from Rs 10,300 to Rs 10,800 per maund.

At the wholesale level, rice is now being sold between Rs 270 and Rs 292 per kilogram, but in the open market, prices have soared even higher, ranging from Rs 320 to Rs 330 per kilogram.

The sudden hike has sparked concern among citizens, particularly daily wage earners and middle-income families, who say the rising prices are putting basic food items out of reach. Consumers are calling on the government to take immediate steps to stabilize prices and ensure affordability in the market.
