BENGALURU: Consumers in Karnataka are facing another increase in rice prices, with traders reporting a fresh hike from Tuesday amid concerns over weak agricultural production and inadequate availability of paddy.

The latest increase marks the third price revision in three months. Traders said ordinary varieties have become costlier by Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg, while the prices of better-quality rice have risen by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg.

At the wholesale level, the price has increased by about Rs 1,000 per quintal. Consumers buying rice in bags are also feeling the impact, with ordinary rice bags becoming costlier by around Rs 200 and premium varieties by Rs 250 to Rs 300.

Traders said the poor monsoon has affected crop production in Karnataka. In several areas, inadequate rainfall and reduced water availability have affected farmers’ ability to raise crops, resulting in concerns over the availability of paddy for rice mills.

The situation has been compounded by demand from overseas markets. According to wholesale traders, substantial quantities of Indian rice are being supplied to foreign countries, reducing the quantity available in the domestic market and contributing to the price pressure.

The impact is particularly visible in Bengaluru, where retail prices are expected to rise further following the latest wholesale revision. Traders estimate that retail prices could increase by Rs 20 to Rs 40 per kg, while wholesale rates may rise by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg, depending on the variety.

Consumers have expressed disappointment over the repeated price increases, saying the additional Rs 250 to Rs 300 per bag is becoming a significant burden for households.

Wholesale traders have also warned that another increase could occur in October if there is no improvement in supply. They said the market would remain sensitive to rainfall, paddy availability and export demand.

The continued rise in rice prices has raised concerns among consumers, who are already dealing with higher household expenses. With three increases recorded in three months and the possibility of another hike next month, rice prices are emerging as a growing concern for households across Karnataka.
