Prices of rice go up, other essentials remain high

The prices of rice went up while that of some other essential commodities decreased a bit but still remained high on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday.

Traders said that the price of coarse variety of rice increased on both the wholesale and retail markets in past one week due to a supply shortage as unrest over quota reform movement and curfew interrupted supply chain.

They said that the prices of vegetables witnessed a sharp rise on the markets in Dhaka city in past week due to a lack of transportation but the situation started to ease in the past couple of days.

The prices of almost all the vegetables decreased on the retail markets due to increased supply.

According to the traders, the prices of broiler chicken, eggs, potatoes and onions remained high on the city markets over the week.

The prices of coarse varieties of rice increased by Tk 2-4 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 52–56 a kilogram on Friday.

Lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 65-70 a kilogram over the week.

The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 75–80 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80–85 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of onion remained high over the week and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 115-120 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 120-130 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of broiler chicken also remained high and the item sold for Tk 180-190 a kilogram on Friday.

Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–700 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 360–380 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of eggs increased by Tk 3-4 a hali (four pieces) and the items sold for Tk 52-54 a hali in the city over the week ending Friday.

The prices of all vegetables decreased slightly but still remained high on the city markets.

Aubergine sold for Tk 70-90 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 50-60 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 70-90 a kilogram, gourd for Tk 70-80 apiece, okra for Tk 50-60 a kilogram and pointed gourd for Tk 50 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of green chillies also remained high and the item sold for Tk 200-220 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

Potatoes sold for Tk 60-65 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of fish remained high on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.

Rohita sold for Tk 350-450 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 340–450 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.

Pangas sold for Tk 220–280 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 240–300 a kilogram on Friday.
