By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, July 20: Paddy plantation has been progressing at a rapid pace across the country over the past two weeks, with around 70 per cent of the total paddy cultivation area now planted, thanks to favourable monsoon rains.

According to the Department of Agriculture, paddy has been transplanted on 958,574 hectares of the country’s total 1.37 million hectares of paddy fields as of Friday, taking the national plantation rate to 69.77 per cent. The pace of plantation has accelerated significantly in recent weeks. 

The plantation rate has jumped by nearly 24 percentage points from around 46 per cent recorded on July 10, while only 25 per cent of the paddy fields had been planted by July 3.

The rapid progress reflects improved monsoon conditions and continuous rainfall across most parts of the country, allowing farmers to intensify transplantation activities. Despite the recent acceleration, this year’s plantation remains slightly behind last year’s pace. 

By July 20, 2025, paddy transplantation had been completed on around 72 per cent of the total cultivated area. Among the provinces, Sudurpaschim Province has recorded the highest paddy plantation, followed by Lumbini and Gandaki provinces.

According to the report, paddy has been planted on 90.67 per cent (174,106 hectares) of the total paddy cultivation area in Sudurpaschim Province as of July 17. The province has a total paddy cultivation area of 162,250 hectares.

Similarly, paddy has been planted on 80.65 per cent (243,042 hectares) of the total paddy cultivation area in Lumbini Province, which has 301,372 hectares under paddy cultivation, and 78.36 per cent (73,349 hectares) of the total 93,606 hectares in Gandaki Province.

The lowest paddy plantation has been recorded in Koshi Province, where transplantation has been completed on 54.86 per cent (151,619 hectares) of the total paddy cultivation area of 276,387 hectares.

Likewise, paddy plantation has been completed on 57.93 per cent (221,546 hectares) of the total paddy cultivation area of 385,933 hectares in Madhes Province, which has the largest paddy cultivation area among the seven provinces.

Meanwhile, 77.33 per cent (88,557 hectares) of the total 114,524 hectares under paddy cultivation has been planted in Bagmati Province, while 77.05 per cent (33,353 hectares) of the total 43,290 hectares has been planted in Karnali Province.
