Myanmar exporters to buy 1.5 million barrels of unprocessed rice amid falling paddy prices, difficulty selling

NAYPYIDAW – Due to the falling price and difficulty in selling, export companies will purchase 1.5 million bushels of unripe rice for about 140 billion kyats, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation Press Release No. (02/2025) dated March (22), 2025.

The following press release is issued in connection with the business coordination meetings and discussions of the Myanmar Rice Federation held on (22-03-2025):

In the current situation, due to the decline in international demand and the decline in domestic demand, farmers who grow unripe rice in the rice market are concerned about the decline in prices and the difficulty in selling. The Myanmar Rice Federation will coordinate with export companies and member rice mills to purchase 1.5 million bushels of unripe rice and 4 million bags of unripe rice in April and May, 2025. Negotiations on the development of parboiled rice production and export were held – With a target of exporting (3) million tons of parboiled rice in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, negotiations were held on upgrading (30) parboiled rice mills, providing necessary support, and short-term and long-term issues for the development of parboiled rice production.

Negotiations on the installation and use of solar energy were held – Negotiations were held on the installation of solar energy machines (41.5) megawatts in large rice mills that have signed MoUs with the Federation and are exporting, and negotiations were held on various systems to install solar energy, purchase and use of electricity generated by the investment of solar companies, They reportedly discussed issues such as obtaining water for agricultural crops.
