Mali to buy 26,000 tonnes of local rice to calm prices
APA-Bamako (Mali)

The Malian government announced on April 23, 2026, that it will purchase 26,030 tonnes of unsold, locally produced rice to stabilize the national market and support domestic farmers.
This intervention is designed to address marketing challenges faced by local producers whose rice is often less competitive than imports due to high production costs. Managed by the Agricultural Products Office, the operation will utilize public subsidies to cover the logistics of purchasing and distribution, effectively clearing excess stock that had previously struggled to find buyers.
This strategic move comes at a critical time as Mali faces significant food security challenges, with humanitarian projections indicating that 5.1 million people require assistance and 1.6 million may face acute food insecurity during the upcoming lean season. To protect household purchasing power, the authorities plan to release these acquired stocks back into the market at subsidized, affordable prices. This effort is intended to act as a buffer against price spikes and ensures that a staple food remains accessible to the general population during the most difficult months of the year.
The initiative integrates with the broader 2026 National Response Plan, which is already set to distribute 20,000 tonnes of food to 1.5 million vulnerable citizens. By directly intervening in the rice sector, the government aims to achieve a threefold impact: providing immediate relief to struggling producers, stabilizing food costs for consumers, and enhancing the state’s overall capacity to manage food-related pressures. This proactive approach underscores a commitment to both agricultural sustainability and national social stability during a period of heightened economic and environmental stress.
