Legal Action Taken Against 50 Shops for Overpricing Rice

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Consumer Affairs Authority says that legal action was taken yesterday against 50 shops for selling rice above the government-imposed controlled price.

Its Director, Asela Bandara, stated that operations to arrest individuals selling rice above the controlled price and hoarding stocks will be intensified from today.

Bandara stated that the raid was carried out in accordance with the Gazette Extraordinary notifications that were issued yesterday under the signature of the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority.

He added that it is mandatory for shopkeepers to display the prices of rice as well.

The Director went on to note that if caught selling rice at prices exceeding the government-imposed controlled prices, a fine of Rs. 100,000 would be imposed on the shops.
