Govt to buy rice for Tk 50 per kg during Aman season

FE REPORT

After achieving a record procurement in the last Boro season, the government has decided to buy 0.7 million tonnes of rice and paddy from the local sources during the upcoming Aman harvesting season.

It plans to collect 0.6 million tonnes of parboiled rice at Tk 50 per kg, 50,000 tonnes of white rice at Tk 49 per kg, and 50,000 tonnes of paddy at Tk 34 per kg.

These prices are higher than last year’s rates. The collection will start on November 20 and continue until February 28, 2026.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC) held on Sunday, chaired by Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, adviser to the ministries of Finance and Science and Technology.

Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder and other FPMC members were present at the meeting.

After the meeting, the food adviser said that the cost of producing Aman rice is lower than Boro rice because farmers need less irrigation–sometimes none– thanks to rainfall during the Aman season.

However, to support farmers, the government has raised the purchase prices this year.

He expressed hope that with everyone’s cooperation, the target for collecting Aman rice and paddy will be successfully achieved.

The government achieved a record-breaking milestone in the domestic Boro procurement programme 2025, which concluded on August 15 last.

The procurement targets were set at 1.8 million tonnes while achievement was 1.83 million tonnes—an all-time high purchase in a single season, said the Directorate General of Food.
