The Indian government has extended the deadline for exporting broken rice to Senegal to support food security while ensuring domestic supply for poultry and ethanol production.

The Indian government has announced an extension for the export of broken rice to Senegal, allowing shipments until February 28, 2025. This decision follows a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

In September 2022, the government imposed a ban on the export of broken rice, but it made exceptions starting May 2023, permitting exports to countries like Senegal, where there is a need for food security support.

India produces about 50 to 60 LMT (lakh metric tons) of broken rice annually, which is primarily used in poultry and animal feed, as well as a feedstock for ethanol production. The ethanol is then supplied to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for blending with petrol.

The original export ban, implemented in September 2022, was introduced to safeguard the domestic supply of broken rice, especially for the poultry industry and ethanol production for the Ethanol Blending Program (EBP). The export policy was later amended to allow exceptions for shipments to countries with specific requests, like Senegal.

The government’s latest extension aims to facilitate continued support for Senegal while maintaining control over domestic availability and usage.
