Domestic rice supply above a year ago
By John Perkins
U.S. rice stocks on August 1st, 2024 were up sharply on the year.
The USDA says rough rice in all positions at the start of the new marketing year was 32.433 million hundredweight, an increase of 34% from August 1st, 2023.
That was due to a year-to-year increase in production and much larger old crop ending stocks.
Most of that was held off farm for use by food and beverage manufacturers and millers.
Long grain and medium grain rice both accounted for 49% of the domestic supply, with short grain making up the remaining 2%.
Milled rice stocks were reported at 4.844 million hundredweight, up 15% on the year, with most of that whole kernel rice, all held off farm for food and export use.
The USDA’s next round of supply and demand estimates is out September 12th.
