Bernas lowering price of imported white rice starting Dec 1.

KUALA LUMPUR: Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) will reduce the price of imported white rice (BPI) at its warehouses from RM3,000 to RM2,800 per tonne effective Dec 1, 2024.

In a statement on Saturday (Nov 30), it said this was in line with the announcement by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

“This price adjustment is in line with the strengthening of the ringgit against the US dollar and is driven by the current price decline in the world rice market after the Indian government lifted its ban on exports of non-basmati rice.

In March 2024, Bernas reduced the BPI price from RM3,200 to RM3,000 per tonne in Peninsular Malaysia although prices were at its highest level in 15 years.

“This clearly demonstrates Bernas’ commitment to work closely with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and industry players to ensure product availability and support the food security agenda,” added the statement.

Currently, Malaysia continues to offer the lowest prices for imported rice in South-East Asia.

“Bernas will continue to adopt a proactive approach in monitoring global market conditions and adjusting prices as needed,” the statement added. – Bernama
