Basmati Exports to the Gulf Set for Recovery
Kalpana Pandey

India’s basmati rice exports to Gulf markets are poised for a revival after a peace deal between Iran and the United States eased trade disruptions that had affected shipments across West Asia. Exporters are expecting a gradual pickup in demand and movement as shipping routes reopen and freight conditions begin to stabilise.
The basmati trade had come under pressure in recent months because of conflict-related uncertainty in the region. Rising freight charges, higher war-risk insurance premiums and shipping rerouting had increased costs for exporters, while some consignments faced delays at Indian ports and in transit. These disruptions hit premium rice shipments particularly hard, especially those bound for Iran and neighbouring Gulf markets.
The latest diplomatic breakthrough is being viewed as a positive development for Indian agri-exports. With trade flows showing signs of normalisation, exporters expect a return of orders from key West Asian destinations, where basmati rice enjoys strong demand among households, retailers and food service buyers. Markets such as Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are expected to play an important role in the recovery.
For India’s rice exporters, the easing of tensions comes as a much-needed relief. The Gulf region has traditionally been a major market for basmati, and smoother logistics could help restore competitiveness after months of elevated shipping costs and uncertainty. Industry participants are now watching closely to see how quickly demand and freight conditions return to normal.
