JAKARTA – Indonesia has become self-sufficient in rice, this was revealed by the National Food Agency which was marked by the initial stock of 2026 reaching 12.529 million tons or an increase of 203 percent in the last two years, as a form of food independence through the production of domestic farmers.

“The government is optimistic that the availability of this rice is very strong. Indonesia has achieved rice self-sufficiency,” said Deputy Head of Food Availability and Stabilization Bapanas I Gusti Ketut Astawa confirmed in Jakarta, Saturday, as reported by ANTARA.

According to him, Indonesia has achieved a national stock of rice reserves from 2025 or carry over stock to 2026 is an exponential achievement. The carry over stock of 2025 which then became the initial stock in 2026 is one of the proofs of the achievement of rice self-sufficiency.

“Bapanas which processes the National Food Balance Projection for 2026 based on data and information from related ministries/institutions, said Ketut, the rice stock for the beginning of 2026 is very high and is considered capable of meeting the needs of public consumption.

“Moreover, the source of rice stock throughout 2025 is not from abroad,” he said.

He said that the initial stock in 2026 which reached 12.529 million tons already included the Government Rice Reserve (CBP) stock managed by Perum Bulog of 3.248 million tons.

In addition, the national rice stock is spread at the household level of producers and consumers, milling, traders, and horeka (hotels, restaurants, catering).

The 12.529 million tons of rice stock at the beginning of 2026 has increased rapidly in the last 2 years. It is recorded that there has been an increase of up to 203.05 percent compared to the initial stock of 2024 which was then at 4.134 million tons.

Meanwhile, the initial stock in 2025 has increased by 49.12 percent because the initial stock in 2025 was 8.402 million tons.

According to him, the condition of rice stocks nationwide for the beginning of 2026 is very high and safe thanks to the hard work of farmers and the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders.

“According to the instructions of Mr. Head of Bapanas Andi Amran Sulaiman, Indonesia does not need to import consumption rice in 2026. This continues the government’s commitment to supporting Indonesian farmers because in 2025 there is also no import,” said Ketut.

The decision not to import general rice and industrial raw materials was taken by the government when it established the 2026 Commodity Balance.

In a forum held at the Coordinating Ministry for Food, it was confirmed that there was no agreement regarding the general rice import quota in 2026. This policy was also previously implemented in 2025, where Indonesia did not import general rice.

Likewise, imports of industrial  raw rice are also not in 2026. Along with that, the government encourages national business actors to be able to optimize local raw materials in the form of broken rice and broken glutinous rice.

Separately, the Head of Bapanas and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman admitted that he was optimistic that the availability of rice nationwide was very safe. He even said that the availability of rice was still sufficient until the 2026 Ramadan and Lebaran moments.

“This is the highest stock at the end of the year during independence. (So) it’s not safe, there are a lot of them, (our stock) is very safe. Now without imports, our stock (CBP) is more than 3 million tons. That’s the highest in history. Our rice is surplus. So there is no problem until Ramadan. There is no problem. Everything is safe,” said Amran.

Amran emphasized that in 2026, in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions, the government continues to be committed to protecting domestic farmers.

“Our domestic farmers should not lose. They must be prosperous. Their hard work must be widely distributed for the needs of the Indonesian people,” he said.

As for the rice stock at the beginning of 2026 of 12.529 million tons, it is calculated to meet almost 5 months this year. This projection is in line with the assumption of monthly rice consumption needs nationwide at 2.591 million tons.

Meanwhile, the projection of rice production in 2026 is 34.7 million tons, so that the end-of-year stock of rice in 2026 nationally will be able to be more solid at 16.194 million tons.
