Indonesian Food Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan, along with the National Logistics Agency (Bulog), recently launched a program in Asahan district, North Sumatra province. Each eligible person will receive 10kg of rice per month for three months, totaling 30kg.
According to Mr. Zulkifli, the total amount of rice allocated for the nationwide support program is approximately 1 million tons.
The government also added 1 million tons to the Food Supply and Price Stabilization Program (SPHP), aiming to help people access rice at affordable prices and limit price fluctuations in the market.
Bulog said it is stepping up preparations for reserves and distribution networks. Rice aid will be distributed after the list of beneficiaries is verified, while SPHP rice continues to be made available through existing distribution channels.
Meanwhile, in Batu Bara district, North Sumatra, Mr. Zulkifli stated that the government is combining consumer support policies with measures to increase production, including improving irrigation systems, facilitating access to fertilizers, and providing agricultural machinery and equipment.
According to the Minister for Food Coordination, the goal is to maintain a balance between food supply, people’s purchasing power, and farmers’ income, while accelerating the national food self-sufficiency program.
The Indonesian government expects that increased rice subsidies, market stabilization, and improved agricultural productivity will help bolster food security amid unfavorable weather conditions and rising consumer demand at the end of the year.
