Rice prices rise again in Kushtia
Traders blame higher transport costs.
Daily Sun Report, Kushtia

Rice prices in Kushtia have risen by Tk 1–2 per kilogram at the retail level amid higher fuel and transportation costs.
Millers and traders said higher paddy prices, production expenses and transportation costs were putting fresh pressure on the market despite administrative efforts to contain prices. Khajannagar, one of the country’s major rice-producing hubs, and retail markets in Kushtia town have witnessed repeated price fluctuations over the past three weeks.
On 17 September, wholesale prices of different rice varieties rose by Tk2–3 per kilogram, while retail prices increased by Tk4–5. In the beginning of October, Miniket rice prices at the mill gate rose from Tk68 to Tk70 and then Tk72 per kilogram while its retail price reached to Tk74 per kilogram.
Traders said the fuel price increase on 3 October pushed up transportation costs, adding to procurement and marketing expenses.
A senior executive of an auto rice mill, requesting anonymity, said higher paddy prices, labour, electricity, packaging and transportation costs had increased production expenses. Abdur Khalek, managing director of Desh Agro Limited, said rice passed through several stages before reaching consumers, with transportation costs affecting both wholesale and retail prices.
However, he said transport costs alone could not explain the price increases, as paddy prices, production expenses and supply conditions also played important roles. He stressed the need for regular monitoring of prices at mill gates, wholesale markets and retail outlets to maintain stability.
