Rice price goes up, other daily essentials become costlier

Consumers in Dhaka’s retail markets face higher rice prices as fine, medium-quality and coarse varieties become Tk 1–3 a kilogram costlier following the fuel oil price increase. 

Traders on Friday said that due to the increased of transportation costs and higher mill-level rice prices push up the prices.

Miniket rice is selling at Tk 68–76 a kilogram, with Desh Agro, Diamond, Manzur and Sagar brands priced at Tk 74–75, up from around Tk 72 a week ago.

Rashid-brand Miniket has risen by Tk 2 to Tk 75 a kilogram. Nazirshail rice prices have also increased by Tk 2–3 over the past two weeks, now ranging from Tk 70 to Tk 95 a killogram, depending on quality.

Coarse rice sells for Tk 50–54 a killogram, which was Tk 48 -52 two weeks ago while medium-grain varieties BR-28 and Paijam cost Tk 58–64 depending on quality and market, up by Tk 2-3.

The prices were observed during visits to markets in Jatrabari and Shantinagar and Karwan Bazar.

Talking to New Age, Farhad Hossain Chokdar, general secretary of the Naogaon District Rice Mill Owners’ Group, said mill-gate rice prices had remained unchanged over the past month.

‘We have not increased rice prices, and our rates have remained stable over the past one month,’ he said.

Nazrul Islam, owner of the ‘New Four Star Auto Rice Mill’ in Kushtia district, however, told New Age that they had raised prices by Tk 50 per sack, citing higher transportation costs and rising paddy prices.

Ali Ahmad, a buyer of the Jatrabari market said he was buying a sack of Pajam rice for Tk 3,050, up from Tk 3,000 a month ago.

Apart from this, the price of the all other daily necessities have increased gradually.

Green chilli was selling at Tk 140-160 a kilogram on Friday, up from Tk 120–140 a week earlier.

Bitter gourd was priced at Tk 80-100 a kilogram, while yardlong beans were selling for Tk 100-120 which was Tk 80-100 earlier.

Pointed gourd was being sold at Tk 60-80 a kilogram, up from Tk 50-60 last week.

Aubergine price Tk 60-80, Cucumber was selling for Tk 50-60 a kilogram, compared with Tk 40-50 in the previous week. Carrot was priced at Tk 140-150 a kilogram.

Beef continued to sell at around Tk 750-850 a kilogram.

Sonali chicken was priced at Tk 340-360 a kilogram, which was Tk 320-340 a week ago, while hybrid Sonali chicken sold for Tk 290-300 and layer chicken for about Tk 350 a kilogram.

Boiler chicken price was Tk 180-200. Price of farmed eggs was Tk 155-160 a dozen. 

Fish prices also remain high in the capital’s markets, with tilapia selling at Tk 250–260 a kilogram, pangas at Tk 220–230 and ruhi and catla at Tk 380–420.

River shrimp costs Tk 1,000–1,300 a killogram, depending on size and quality. Pabda sells for Tk 350–400, large ruhi Tk 450–500, farmed koi Tk 300 and poa Tk 260 a killogram.

Farmed shrimp is priced at Tk 500–850, while medium-sized ruhi sells for Tk 300–350 a killogram.

Packaged aromatic rice price was at about Tk 190-230 a kilogram, according to market data. Local garlic was selling for Tk 100-120 a kilogram and imported garlic at Tk 150-160 a kilogram.

Fine red lentils were priced at Tk 170 a kilogram, medium quality varieties at Tk 120 and coarse lentils at Tk 105 a kilogram.

Unpackaged sugar was selling at Tk 115-120 a kilogram, Meanwhile, red sugar was retailing at Tk 140-150 a kilogram, up from Tk 110-120 earlier.

Bottled soya bean oil sold for Tk 205 a kilogram, while unpackaged soya bean oil cost Tk 180-190 and palm oil Tk 165 to Tk 170 a litre.

Packaged flour prices have risen to Tk 75-80 a kilogram, while the price of a 2-kilogram packet has increased from Tk 140 to Tk 160. Unpackaged flour was selling at Tk 60 on the day.

Unpackaged atta was selling at Tk 50-55 a kilogram which was Tk 45-50 before fuel price hike and packaged atta at Tk 60-70 depending on the brand.
