African and ethanol demand lifts Indian broken rice prices by $36/t

Source: Spglobal

Indian 100% broken white rice prices have risen by $36/t since early March, reaching $320/t FOB as of October 2. The market has been supported by limited availability, firm demand from African buyers and strong use of rice by the domestic ethanol industry.

Prices have continued to rise despite disruptions to shipments to China. In March 2026, China rejected an Indian rice cargo over reported concerns about GM material and subsequently began suspending supplier licenses. By September, restrictions had reportedly affected seven Indian exporters.

India resumed exports of 100% broken white rice in March 2025 after lifting a ban introduced in 2022. Shipments to China increased significantly afterward, but remain well below the levels seen in 2021–2022.

During India’s absence from the market, China shifted purchases toward alternative suppliers. Myanmar became China’s largest rice supplier in 2026, while significant volumes also came from Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan.

Even after India returned to the market, China continued to rely heavily on established suppliers. Strong demand from Africa and the ethanol sector, however, has allowed Indian broken rice prices to rise despite weaker Chinese buying.
