Indian rice export prices rose to a one year high this week, Reuters reported, as tightening supplies and concerns over the summer sown crop, hurt by below normal rainfall, lifted rates across major exporting markets, Reuters reported.

A Kolkata based dealer with a global trade house said crop production estimates were being revised lower as the rainfall deficit widened, a trend that was supporting prices. According to the country’s weather department, India was likely to receive below average monsoon rainfall in September, after August precipitation came in 16 per cent below normal.

India’s 5 per cent broken parboiled rice was quoted at $371 to $377 per tonne this week, up from $369 to $375 last week, while the 5 per cent broken white variety was priced at $368 to $373 per tonne.

Vietnam’s 5 per cent broken rice was offered at $440 to $445 per tonne, unchanged from a week earlier, trade sources said. A trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said domestic supplies were falling as the summer autumn harvest neared completion, even as demand also slowed. The trader added that the Philippines was ramping up rice imports, though it was sourcing from suppliers other than Vietnam. State media, citing the Vietnam Food Association, reported that the country’s rice exports this year were estimated at 7.74 million tonnes.

Bangladesh halved previously approved export volumes of aromatic rice for traders, cutting the maximum quantity they could ship, as the country grappled with high domestic prices and the risk of a further increase. The government had earlier approved exports of 45,270 tonnes of aromatic rice, of which only 2,419 tonnes had been shipped by August 30. The revised approval set a minimum export price of $1.60 per kg and required customs quality checks along with repatriation of export earnings.

Thailand’s 5 per cent broken rice rose to $488 per tonne, up from a range of $483 to $485 last week, traders said. Prices were rising on expectations that output would continue to remain low, a Bangkok based trader said.
