The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday approved proposals to import 100,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from Vietnam, 25,000 tonnes of sugar, 2 crore litres of refined soybean oil and 10,000 tonnes of lentils.

The approval came at a meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

Under one of the approved proposals, Bangladesh will import 100,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from Vietnam under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.

The rice will be procured from Vietnam Southern Food Corporation (VINAFOOD II) at a cost of Tk515.05 crore, with the price fixed at $416 per tonne.

The committee also approved a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce to procure 25,000 tonnes of sugar through international open tendering.

PT Trinity Cahya Energy of Indonesia was recommended as the supplier at a total cost of Tk157.86 crore, with the price fixed at $514 per tonne.

Another proposal from the commerce ministry to procure 2 crore litres of refined soybean oil through international open tendering was also approved.

PT Trinity Cahya Energy will supply the soybean oil at a total cost of Tk282.56 crore, with the price fixed at $1.15 per litre.

The committee further approved the procurement of 10,000 tonnes of lentils in 50-kg bags through national open tendering.

Nabil Naba Foods Ltd of Rajshahi was recommended as the supplier at a cost of Tk78.96 crore, with the price fixed at Tk78.96 per kg.

The procurement of essential food items is part of the government’s efforts to maintain adequate stocks and ensure stable supplies in the domestic market.
