Shipments rise 14% to $7.64 billion; Basmati rice shipments decline on reduced offtake.

Robust demand for buffalo meat and non-basmati rice has pushed up India’s exports of agricultural products that are monitored by APEDA, by around 14 per cent in value terms to $7.641 billion during the April-June quarter of the current financial year. Exports stood at $6.711 billion in the same period last year.

Non-basmati rice exports grew around 12 per cent to $1.59 billion during the first quarter over c $1.41 billion in the previous year. In volume terms, the non-basmati rice shipments registered 32 per cent growth at 4.38 million tonnes (3.32 million tonnes in Q1 last year).

Buffalo meat (carabeef) shipments saw a 66 per cent increase to $1.49 billion (896.82 million in Q1 last year). In volume terms, the buffalo meat exports were up 32 per cent at 3.4 lakh tonnes over corresponding previous year’s 2.57 lakh tonnes.

Pulses up 52%

Basmati rice shipments declined 3 per cent in value at $1.44 billion ($1.49 billion) on reduced volumes. Shipment volumes of basmati rice were down at 15.39 lakh tonnes against 17.32 lakh tonnes the previous year.

Exports of miscellaneous processed items were up around 14 per cent at $470.70 million (413 million), while pulses also registered a growth of 52 per cent during the quarter at $363.77 million ($238.75 million). In volume terms, the exports of pulses stood at over 4.02 lakh tonnes during the quarter against corresponding last year’s 2.39 lakh tonnes.

Shipments of processed vegetables were marginally up at $207.61 million ($204.69 million), while fresh vegetable exports were down at $175.46 million ($197.57 million). Other products that witnessed a decline in exports include fresh fruits at $281.11 million ($324.87 m), dairy product at $171.27 million ($182.22 million), groundnut at $164.19 million ($180.27 million) and guargum at $149.53 million ($166.15 million). Poultry products also witnessed a decline at $53.73 million ($73.26 million).
