Telangana, which has emerged as a top-3 rice producer in the country, is considering introducing an exclusive rice export policy to promote the export of the staple cereal.
Telangana Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has said that the state produces about three crore tonnes of rice annually. “We consume only 36 lakh tonnes, leaving a huge surplus. We consume barely one-tenth of the total production,” he said.
Addressing a conference on ‘Unlocking Market Potential: Advancing Fortified Rice in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh’ here on Monday, the Minister said that the proposed policy would facilitate rice exports and support rice millers in accessing national and international markets. “The policy is currently under preparation,” he said.
“We have already begun exporting rice to countries such as the Philippines. We will continue to support the rice milling industry in expanding its business,” the Minister said.
The event was organised by Millers for Nutrition in collaboration with KCP Nutritious Private Limited.
The event highlighted the growing role of fortified staple foods in addressing micronutrient deficiencies and strengthening access to better nutrition through everyday diets.
“Food fortification offers a practical and scalable pathway to improving nutrition outcomes because it builds on foods that people already consume every day. Millers for Nutrition is working with industry partners to strengthen fortification practices, improve product quality and expand access to fortified staple foods,” Monojit Indra, Senior Practice Leader, TechnoServe and Programme Leader, Millers for Nutrition Asia, said in a statement on Monday.
