National average price spreads for rice across five East African nations showed distinct market trends in March and April 2026, measured in US dollars per metric ton.

Kenya recorded the highest overall costs, starting at 1,376 dollars in March and rising slightly to 1,382 dollars in April.

Rwanda closely followed this upward trajectory, where rice prices increased from 1,323 dollars to 1,376 dollars over the same period.

Uganda experienced the sharpest price jump, climbing significantly from 1,014 dollars in March to 1,142 dollars in April.

In contrast, Tanzania was the only nation to see a market decline, with average prices dropping from 992 dollars down to 939 dollars.

South Sudan maintained the lowest rates among the selected countries, showing a minor increase from 685 dollars to 702 dollars.

These varying regional dynamics highlight differing local supply factors according to data from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.
