Kakinada port anchors India’s rice exports as shipment pipeline remains strong

- IR64 parboiled and white rice dominate export mix
- Large trading houses lead shipments amid strong Africa demand
India’s rice export activity remains heavily concentrated at Kakinada, with the port continuing to anchor shipment flows amid a strong pipeline and sustained demand from African markets. Kakinada handled 719,250 tonnes (t), driven largely by non-basmati grades such as IR64 5% parboiled (PB), 100% white rice (WR), and 20% WR. IR64 remains a key export variety due to its affordability and wide acceptability across Africa and Asia.
While shipped volumes stood at 235,450 t, a substantial 364,800 t remained at anchorage, indicating a heavy loading pipeline. An additional 119,000 t in expected arrivals suggests continued shipment momentum. The cargo mix highlights strong demand for both parboiled and white rice, particularly for West African destinations such as Benin, Senegal, and Guinea.
Major players dominate shipment flows
Export activity is largely controlled by large trading houses and integrated supply chain players. Companies such as Olam Agri, Aditya Birla Global Trading, Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), and Satyam Balajee feature prominently across multiple vessels, reflecting high market concentration. India’s rice export sector is led by large-scale exporters with strong global distribution networks and processing capabilities.
Kandla and other ports play supporting roles
Kandla handled 137,109 t, primarily generic bagged rice, with moderate activity across berth and anchorage stages. Dhamra and Kolkata saw limited volumes, together contributing marginally to overall exports.
Overall, India’s rice exports remain east coast-driven, with IR64 parboiled and white rice dominating the trade. Strong participation from major trading houses and a large vessel pipeline point to sustained export activity in the near term.
