Indonesia achieves rice self-sufficiency, advances toward national food sovereignty: Prabowo

Author: Julian Isaac, Editor: Imanuddin Razak

President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed that Indonesia has achieved rice self-sufficiency and is now on a stronger path toward full national food self-sufficiency.

Addressing business leaders, economists, and policymakers during the Indonesia Economic Outlook 2026 forum in Jakarta on Friday, February 13, 2026, Prabowo said the achievement reflects cross-sector collaboration to strengthen agricultural production and maintain food supply stability amid global uncertainty.

He cited that national rice production in 2025 reached nearly 34.7 million tons, marking a 13 percent increase compared to the previous year.

“Government rice reserves managed by State logistics Agency (Perum Bulog) reached 4.2 million tons in June 2025 − the highest level in history − and remain in a safe position,” Prabowo said as quoted in a statement obtained by Agricom.id on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

The president emphasized that food security is not merely a matter of production, but a foundation of national sovereignty and a pillar of economic stability. Amid global volatility, Indonesia’s ability to secure its food supply demonstrates the country’s resilience.

At the same event, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto noted that Indonesia’s economy remains solid. In the fourth quarter, economic growth reached 5.11 percent year-on-year, the second highest among G20 countries after India.

Airlangga highlighted the 5.03 percent growth of the agriculture sector, underscoring its key role in supporting price stability and strengthening national food security.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman attributed the success in rice self-sufficiency to consistent, farmer-focused policies. The government, he said, has implemented two main strategies: deregulation and agricultural transformation from traditional methods to modern, mechanized systems.

These policies aim to boost productivity, reduce production costs, and improve farmers’ welfare while ensuring sufficient and affordable food supplies for the public.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Agriculture is committed to advancing modernization, improving governance, and expanding cross-sector collaboration to sustainably maintain rice self-sufficiency and move toward comprehensive national food self-sufficiency.

With rising production, secure reserves, and integrated policy support, the government remains optimistic that agriculture will continue to serve as a key engine of economic growth and a cornerstone of national resilience.
