The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has coordinated the signing of new contract farming agreements between agro-processing companies and two modern agricultural communities in Kampong Thom province, marking another step forward in Cambodia’s agricultural modernisation efforts.

The contracts, valued at approximately $7 million, were signed on Sunday under the leadership of Khim Finan, Undersecretary of State at MAFF.

The agreements cover about 6,000 hectares of paddy rice cultivation and aim to ensure stable markets and fair prices for local farmers.

The MAFF reported that it has now completed market connections for all modern rice-growing agricultural communities for the current season.

These arrangements guarantee affordable and agreed-upon prices in advance. In addition, the ministry has facilitated access to low-interest loans for around 2,000 farming families to support rice production on nearly 15,000 hectares across Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, and Kampong Chhnang provinces.

According to MAFF, contract farming is a key strategy to modernise the agricultural sector, reduce income risks for farmers, and ensure a reliable supply of crops for markets and agro-processing industries.

By securing guaranteed buyers and prices, the system also helps reduce farmers’ dependence on middlemen and promotes more stable agricultural incomes.
