India remains one of the world’s largest rice producers, recording a total output of 1,490.74 lakh tonne in the 2024–25 crop year, according to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare (DA&FW). A significant share of this production comes from a handful of states that dominate the national rice economy.
Top 5 Rice-Producing States in India
1. Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 209.31 lakh tonne, accounting for 14.04% of India’s total rice output. The state registered a sharp 30.9% rise from last year’s 159.9 lakh tonne, aided by fertile plains, irrigation coverage, and extensive paddy cultivation.
2. Telangana
Telangana produced 170.94 lakh tonne, contributing 11.47% to the national total. This marks a 1.3% increase from last year’s 168.74 lakh tonne. Projects like Kaleshwaram have strengthened irrigation, keeping rice yields steady.
3. West Bengal
With 164.91 lakh tonne, West Bengal holds an 11.06% share in India’s production. The state posted a 5.1% rise from 156.87 lakh tonne last year, supported by fertile alluvial soils, favourable climate, and high-yielding rice varieties.
4. Punjab
Punjab contributed 143.61 lakh tonne, making up 9.63% of India’s rice output. Production remained stable compared to last year’s 143.56 lakh tonne. With its mechanised farming and assured irrigation, Punjab continues to play a vital role in food security.
5. Odisha
Odisha secured the fifth spot with 96.14 lakh tonne, representing a 6.45% share. The state recorded a 13.5% increase from 84.74 lakh tonne last year, thanks to fertile delta regions and supportive monsoon conditions.
