The Sokoto State Government has launched the sale of subsidised rice at N48,000 per 50kg bag to help residents cope with rising food prices. Governor Ahmad Aliyu announced the initiative on Sunday, highlighting that it is part of the state’s collaboration with donors and stakeholders to make food more accessible.

The announcement came as the state government officially began distributing essential relief items to vulnerable and low-income residents. The initiative aligns with Sokoto’s broader commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance.

Governor Aliyu emphasized that in addition to the subsidised rice, the state is providing food supplies, financial aid, and motorcycles to those in need, thanks to contributions from generous donors.

“In addition, we have introduced the sale of subsidised rice at N48,000 per 50kg bag to make food more affordable for our people. This initiative, undertaken during the sacred month of Ramadan, reflects our dedication to alleviating hardship and fostering a more compassionate and resilient society. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all donors and stakeholders who have partnered with us in this noble cause,” he stated.

He assured residents that the government remains committed to uplifting the most disadvantaged members of society through various social intervention programmes.

This development follows a N1 billion subsidised foodstuff initiative rolled out by the Sokoto State Government in February 2025. The programme aims to provide affordable food items to civil servants and low-income earners across six local government areas.

The Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi-Adare, disclosed this during a training session for shop facilitators. He noted that the initiative is designed to ease the financial strain of purchasing essential food supplies and improve workers’ welfare.

Chairman of the implementation committee, Alhaji Chiso Dattijo, explained that the pilot phase primarily targets state and local government employees, including primary school teachers, to mitigate the impact of rising food costs.

The initiative initially covers Dange Shuni, Wamakko, Bodinga, Kware, Sokoto North, and Sokoto South, with plans for future expansion. Under the scheme, eligible workers can buy food items worth up to 30% of their monthly salary, with a spending cap of N15,000 per worker.
