KARACHI: The European Union has issued a warning to Pakistan regarding potential disruptions in rice imports from the country, prompting Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, to meet with the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) in Karachi on Friday.

Expressing concern over disruptions in rice exports, Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that the European Union is highly sensitive regarding quality standards and has issued warnings about halting imports. “We need to address these issues proactively to ensure smooth exports,” he cautioned, reflecting the urgency of the situation.

As per a news statement, minister emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the export sector, stating, “The Prime Minister and the entire government stand with the business community. When you thrive, it benefits the economy and reaches the labor force.”

Rice exporters voiced their frustrations over undue pressure from government institutions, citing repeated calls for years-old records and unnecessary meetings that have created anxiety within the business community. In response, Hussain acknowledged these concerns and reassured exporters of their importance to the national economy. “You are respected and vital for the country’s economy. We have already directed the FIA [Federal Investigation Agency] to avoid unnecessary contact with the business community.” The minister further encouraged exporters to embrace modern technologies and upgrade their systems to enhance competitiveness in the global market. In addition to addressing quality concerns, rice exporters urged the government to grant the rice export sector industry status, citing export revenues between $2 billion and $4 billion. They also requested permission for weighbridges at ports or negotiations with commercial weighbridge operators for concessional rates, highlighting the need for supportive infrastructure to bolster their operations.
