A consignment of 11,500 tonnes of non-basmati or parboiled rice has arrived at the Chattogram port under package-2 from India to meet the country’s domestic demand.

The consignment carried on a ship (MV DDS Marina) reached the Chattogram port, said a food ministry release on Monday.

The physical test of the imported rice after collecting the sample has already been completed, it said.

The loading and unloading of the rice will start soon and necessary steps have already been taken in this regard, the release added.

The proposal on rice import was approved by the committee on government purchase on January 7 and a private Indian company will supply it to Bangladesh as the lowest bidder, according to the ministry sources.

The government inked a contract with India to import a total of 4,50,000 tonnes of parboiled rice under nine packages.

Of the deal, at least 2,85,769 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled have already landed into the country and the rest would come in phases.

The committee approved the policy proposal to import 4.50 lakh tonnes of rice from international markets for 2024-25 financial year for national emergency needs and public interest.
