Rice was 74% headed compared with the five-year average of 65%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thunderstorms that parked over northeastern Arkansas on Thursday morning prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for the area, which included parts of Jackson, Independence, Izard, Searcy and Stone counties, until mid-morning.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/ricenewstoday.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-80.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavy rains, in some places up to 8 inches, fell in a narrow band across several NE Arkansas counties on Thursday morning, causing some farmers concern for their almost-ready-to-harvest rice crop. (Photo by Matthew Davis, U of A System Division of Agriculture.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On social media, farmers reported between 4 to 8 inches in Independence County and 5 to 6 inches in Poinsett County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not good at all. I\u2019m hearing amounts of 5 to 6 inches since yesterday,\u201d Jarrod Hardke, extension rice agronomist for the\u00a0University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRice that\u2019s ready or near ready for harvest has a tendency to cave in and lodge under heavy rain, especially if there\u2019s any wind at all involved,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m waiting to hear more from folks on how it\u2019s holding up. Limited comments so far are things are holding up but rice is starting to sag in some places.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Davis, Jackson County extension staff chair, said he had seen about 6 inches of rain near Newport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the rice in my plots looks good,\u201d Davis said after making the rounds Thursday morning, he said. \u201cYou can see edges blown down where there is heavy grass pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grass caught the rain, collapsed and brought neighboring rice plants down with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news was this\u2014\u201cthere were no complete losses anywhere I\u2019ve seen so far,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardke said that on Monday, heavy rain also affected rice in southeastern Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt put some rice down pretty flat in Chicot County,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stalled front<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin Condry, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service at Little Rock, said the rain scenario was set in motion when a strong low-pressure system moved out of the Central Plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the low continued to track towards the northeast across central Missouri it pulled a frontal boundary across northern portions of the state,\u201d Condry said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overnight, \u201cthis boundary stalled, allowing moisture to ride along it. This is where we got into a situation where heavy rainfall began to train and&nbsp;back-build over the same areas,\u201d he said. \u201cTraining\u201d is a phenomenon where repeating areas of rain move over the same area in a short period of time.<br><br>\u201cSome of the highest totals were out of Independence and Jackson counties overnight, where observers reported 5.85 and 5.37 inches respectively,\u201d Condry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the most part, we are finished with the rainfall in the north for at least the next day or so,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we get into this weekend, models are indicating more showers and thunderstorms could be in the forecast as additional systems impact the state.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arkansas rice farmers in northeastern Arkansas were checking their fields for losses after storms on Thursday dumped more than 6 inches of rain; a less-than-ideal situation for a crop so near to harvest.
