The decision by MEPs to reject a proposal for tighter regulation of pesticides \u201cinvalidates the ideological approach\u201d by the European Commission on plant protection products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is according to the group representing EU farmers and agri co-ops, Copa Cogeca which welcomed the outcome of the\u00a0vote in the European Parliament\u00a0today (Wednesday, November 22).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs rejected the commission\u2019s proposed Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR), which would see a reduction of pesticide use of 50% across the EU by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group said that the \u201clack of dialogue, the imposition of objectives from above, the refusal to assess the impact, and the lack of funding for agricultural proposals must end now\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cEU farmers and agri co-operatives will continue to improve their environmental sustainability, but they need realistic objectives and the necessary support.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo elements that are completely missing from the commission\u2019s text,\u201d the group, which denounced the \u201cgap between political rhetoric and the lack of concrete solutions\u201d of the proposal, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While MEPs \u201ctried to improve\u201d the proposal, Copa Cogeca said, they realised that this would \u201cnot be enough\u201d and sent the proposal back to the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll this polarisation could have been avoided and solutions found without the ideological obstinacy of a few decision makers during the whole process,\u201d the group claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSolutions can only be found through dialogue with farmers and their co-operatives, not by imposing disconnected objectives from the top with no solutions,\u201d Copa Cogeca said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disappointment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Fine Gael MEPs Se\u00e1n Kelly, Frances Fitzgerald, Deidre Clune, Maria Walsh and Colm Markey have expressed their disappointment at the outcome of today\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five Fine Gael MEPs voted in favour of an ambitious pesticides regulation, including amendments to reduce the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50% by 2030 across the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They pointed out that Ireland already has a low usage of such plant protection products compared to other EU member states and is \u201con course\u201d to meet this target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MEPs said they would like to see a practical pesticides regulation, allowing some flexibility for national authorities to decide on pesticide usage in designated \u201csensitive\u201d areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next steps for the SUR, which was proposed by the European Commission in June 2022, are yet to be determined following today\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
