SEOUL, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's rice output fell this year due to bad weather conditions, statistical office data showed Tuesday.
Rice production totaled 3,764,000 tons in 2022, down 3 percent from the previous year, according to Statistics Korea.
Rice output turned downward this year after growing 10.7 percent last year. Rice production kept sliding for five successive years from 2016 to 2020.
This year's downturn was attributable to the shortage of sunny days and precipitation as well as the negative effect of Typhoon Hinnamnor.
The size of rice paddies across the country shrank 0.7 percent over the year to 727,054 hectares this year, furthering the rice output reduction.
Rice production declined 2.3 percent per 10 acres to 518 kg in 2022.
The country's rice consumption has been on the decline for the past decades owing to the change in eating habits.
